Canada Child Benefit (CCB) 2026: How to Apply

If you’re raising kids in Canada, the first government benefit you’ll hear about is the Canada Child Benefit (CCB).

When I first arrived in Canada, I had no idea this program even existed. After we received permanent residency, I prepared my children’s documents one by one and applied directly through CRA My Account — and we’ve been receiving the CCB every month since.

With three kids, the CCB is not pocket money for us. It genuinely helps us plan for education costs, school supplies, and after-school activities.

What Is the CCB?

The Canada Child Benefit is a tax-free monthly payment from the federal government to families raising children under 18.

You don’t pay any tax on the amount you receive.

The benefit is recalculated every year based on your household income, and the amount also changes with the number of children you have and their ages.

Who Can Receive It?

You can apply if you meet the following conditions:

  • ✔ You have a child under 18
  • ✔ You actually live with the child
  • ✔ You are primarily responsible for the child’s care
  • ✔ You are a resident of Canada for tax purposes
  • ✔ You and your spouse file a tax return every year

Permanent residents qualify, of course — and in some cases, work permit holders and protected persons can also apply. Since eligibility depends on your immigration status and how long you’ve lived in Canada, it’s best to double-check the CRA requirements for your situation.

How Much Can You Get?

This is the question I hear most often: “How much will I receive each month?”

The honest answer is — it’s different for every family.

These factors are all taken into account:

  • Adjusted family net income
  • Number of children
  • Each child’s age
  • Whether a child is eligible for the disability benefit
  • Whether you have a spouse or partner

In other words, two families raising the same two kids can receive very different amounts depending on their income.

When Is the CCB Paid?

The CCB is generally paid around the 20th of each month.

If you register your bank account with the CRA, the payment is deposited automatically. When the date falls on a weekend or holiday, the payment usually arrives a little earlier.

Why Filing Your Taxes Really Matters

Your CCB is recalculated every year based on your tax return.

If you don’t file, your payments can be delayed or stopped — even if you had no income.

For couples, it’s important that both partners submit a tax return every year. This is the single most common reason families see their payments interrupted.

An RRSP Can Actually Increase Your CCB

Most people think of the RRSP as just a tax-refund account, but it can affect your CCB too.

RRSP contributions reduce your taxable income, which can lower your Adjusted Family Net Income — and a lower AFNI can mean a higher CCB payment.

Our family started contributing to RRSPs more actively as my husband’s income grew, and we experienced the benefit on both sides: a bigger tax refund and a positive effect on our CCB.

The impact varies by household income and situation, so it’s worth looking at your own numbers before deciding how much to contribute.

How to Apply

You can apply in one of three ways:

  1. Online through CRA My Account
  2. Automatically when registering a newborn’s birth
  3. By mail using Form RC66

Applying online is the easiest option, and you can track the processing status as well.

Changes You Must Report to the CRA

If any of the following happens, you need to update the CRA:

  • A change of address
  • Marriage or divorce
  • The birth of a child
  • A child no longer living with you
  • A change of bank account
  • Leaving Canada or living abroad long-term

If you don’t report changes on time, you may be asked to repay amounts you weren’t entitled to.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can work permit holders receive the CCB?

In some cases, yes. It depends on the type of work permit and how long you’ve lived in Canada — you’ll need to meet the CRA’s eligibility requirements.

I didn’t pay any tax — can I still receive it?

Even if you didn’t owe any tax, you must still file a tax return. The CCB can only be calculated after your return is filed.

Do I have to pay tax on the CCB?

No. The CCB is a tax-free government benefit.

Final Thoughts

The CCB is more than a monthly child allowance — it’s one of the most important supports for families raising children in Canada.

If your family has just settled here, the two things that matter most are applying on time and never missing your annual tax return.

The process felt complicated to me at first, but once I created a CRA account and applied myself, it was much easier than I expected. Now managing the CCB is just part of our yearly tax routine, and it’s a real help in planning our children’s education costs.
